Future Work Skills for Malaysians

Ever since the pandemic hit out shores and Malaysia went into our first Movement Control Order (MCO), people in general have been forced to re-examine how to do things. Businesses had to pivot and even our education system had to adapt quick to the demands of remote learning.

After months of living in the new norm, we have all experience the good and the bad of working remotely. Whether we like it or not, these are just a glimpse of how things may end up being in the future. With the risk of other diseases like Covid-19 popping up, the prolonged need to be able to adapt and continue work (and living) remotely may change the demand of future employee skills.

After going through many publications and reports based on studies of the subject of future skills, be it soft skills or hard skills, we have somewhat seen a common trend in terms of what are desired of the future workforce.

Here is a list of our very own take on the future work skills, divided into three (3) main categories:

  • Skills for the Self
  • Skills for the Self and Team Relation
  • Skills for the Developing Others

Skills for the Self

Skill set meant to improve self-awareness, self-management, and self-leadership.

  • Data Literacy
  • Mental Flexibility
  • System Planning

Skills for the Self and Team Relation

Skill set meant to improve peer-to-peer and group interactions.

  • Communicating in a Digital Environment
  • Building Relationships
  • Understanding Cross-Generational Teams
  • Working with Remote Teams
  • Ensuring Teamwork Effectiveness

Skills for the Developing Others

Skill set meant to empower and develop subordinates and team members.

  • Inspiring Trust
  • Motivating Different Personalities
  • Driving Change & Innovation
  • Coaching & Role Modelling

We at Access Ideas Malaysia always believe that the best way to move forward is with a systematic competency development programme. Although it is common for organisations to put in more effort on boosting employee’s technology know-how, the “human touch” has become scarce and is needed more than ever before. Do get in touch with us if you are keen to explore topics on the soft skills side of future work competencies. Together, we can come up with a customised training intervention that creates necessary awareness towards higher cognitive, social, and collaborative skills for your employees.

Let’s make training accessible!
